        Perhaps it is a moot point now, but when I was faced
with this same task, I saw the potential linear algebra adventure
and decided to avoid it by saving the original matrix and
copying it over the current matrix in a callback.

        It is simple, but perhaps not sufficient for your
application. Just thought I'd mention it.
