Jan,
On the RE2/MCO, there's absolutely no way to get around the problem you just
described. You have to restart Gfx after changing the EEPROM. I would be
surprised if this limitation has been fixed on the IR.
However, if you're willing to always use the 2560x1024 framebuffer, you could
tell xdm (or the X server) to manage only the portion of the screen
corresponding to the High Resolution display. This way you wont have to restart
Gfx but you'll have to send a SIGHUP to xdm when changing the size of the frame
buffer area to manage.
I don't remember the actual command to tell xdm to manage an area different
from full screen. Maybe someone will remember it... ;-)
