This sounds like an interaction of the pixel depth with the type of
visual you are or requesting. It would appear that with the smaller
pixel depth you are not getting multi-samples.

Going back to fewer channels and trying to reduce the managed area
will not increase the pixel depth unless you restart the graphics,
hence the aparent inconsistency.

Use pfQueryWin to determine if the your visual has multi-samples.
You can have multi-sample anti-aliasing with the smallest pixel depth,
you just have to select the appropriate visual.
