Thanks for all who replied to my posts! Several good ideas were
suggested but the one that seems to be the most workable is to
simply disable writing to the depth mask during the drawing of
the transparent objects. E.g. :
glDepthMask(GL_FALSE); /* in pre-draw */
glDepthMask(GL_TRUE); /* in post-draw */
suggested by: gene koh ++at++ sgi.
