Creating haze in the distance

I'm trying to use the Performer (2.0) fog functions to create far-away
haze. I'm having trouble getting the parameters just right -- I don't want
everything far away to be completely occluded by fog, just fuzzied out a
little bit. Nor do I want ground fog. What are appropriate parameter sets
to use with the pfEarthSky/pfFog C++ classes?
