Yes, Remi, I have reproduce the problem on my machine: Indy, IRIX 5.3, GR3-XZ
Note that -DIRISGL should also be used while compiling for Iris GL.

There is an example on how to use pfConfigStage() in its man page. Example 4
suggests the call to pfFrame() to trigger the execution of all configuration
functions in various stages.

The pfChannel() man page also mention that "Upon creation, pfChannels are
automatically assigned to the first pfPipeWindow of its parent pfPipe." That
might explain why the pfPipeWindow has to be configured before any channel is
created. But, that doesn't convince me ... :-)

Let see if someone has a better explanation.
