640x480 active lines STEREO ???

Performer Friends,

Why can't I get this to work?

I can put the monitor into 1280x1024_60 mode and then kick it into 120Hz
mode and get 1280x512 x 2 (left and right).

I can put the monitor into 640x480_60 and then put it into
640x240_120.

By extension putting the display into 640x1024_60 and 640_512_120
would seem to get me what I want, except that X doesn't seem to manage
this 640x1024 vof correctly and my Sony 1270 freaks out on this ratio
of horiz and vertical.

I'm happy to use either top/bottom or Quad buffer.

Does any one recognize this or have any ideas?
