As far as wholesale .vs retail price markups go, the Performer manuals
are at an amazingly low price: 2100 pages of documentation in three
volumes, professionally printed, bound in nice "Stay-Flat" bindings
rather than el-cheapo wire or plastic rings, pretty pictures, and
similar factors make our cost very close to that of the sale price.
(In fact, if you accounted for the factory's overhead in handling
shipments, postage, etc., we probably loose money on each set that
we sell. Maybe if the old-guard image generator companies figure this
out, they'll order thousands of copies of the books and drive SGI out
of business ;-)
That notwithstanding the value of the books and the economy of their
pricing, they are clearly not inexpensive. We wanted everyone to have
access to the documentation, so that is why all of it is available
on-line and via the web.
