I think that what is needed is to have the following sequence of events:-
1) Person A mails a question/problem.
2) Persons B->Z should mail their responses *directly* to A and *not*
to info-performer.
3) When person A has a good fix for his/her problem, they write a summary
of the best answers (ie the ones that worked) and post that to info-performer
so that everyone gets the benefit of the answers without reading 20 copies
of variations on the same answer and 20 more incorrect suggestions.
This requires a little discipline and some consideration to others in the
group - but no change in the way the group operates. Since the ratio of
questions to answers is something like 1:5, we could reduce our mail
flow by 80% at a stroke.
The problem with a weekly digest is that if I ask a question, it could
take a week for my question to make it into the digest, and another week
for the reply to make the NEXT digest - maybe two weeks to get a reply - instead
of a few hours as it does now.
Also, I still need to read through exactly the same number of lines of email
as I would with the present scheme.
As for the large numbers of 'subscribe/unsubscribe' messages, I can skip over them
without reading them - I don't find them too intrusive (although it would be
more polite for people to send them to the correct mailing address)>
