You sound like a customer for pfHighlight (which was in Performer1.2 but
has got some swank new modes in 2.0).

Look at the hlcube.c sample program
        1.2: /usr/src/Performer/src/pguide/libpr/progs/hlcube.c
        2.0: /usr/share/Performer/src/pguide/libpr/C/hlcube.c
