Company description:

SRI International is one of the world's largest contract research firms.
Founded in 1946 in conjunction with Stanford University as the Stanford
Research Institute, we later became fully independent and were incorporated as
a non-profit organization under U.S. and California laws. Solving client
technological and business problems is our primary goal.

SRI International established the Virtual Perception Program to explore the
technology that has come to be known by such terms as virtual-reality,
telepresence, and cyberspace. This program has three main thrusts:
development of new hardware and software components for virtual-reality
systems, development of virtual-reality applications, and evaluation of the
(application-dependent) sensory requirements of virtual-reality systems.

SHAVE (SHAred Virtual Environment), one of the groups main projects, is a
multi-user virtual environment system that allows several users on the internet
to interact whithin a shared 3D world. The SHAVE system provides a framework
for remote collaborative work whithin interactive and editable 3D worlds. The
current SHAVE prototype runs on SGI platforms, and a PC version is under
development. It uses the OpenInventor 3D library and the Performer Toolkit,
both based on OpenGL.
