prediction is the best approach, and it should not be too difficult
to develop a basic predictor - of course, if I'm doing a SIGGRAPH
paper, I want to research many alternatives, but for simple got-to-get-
it-done engineering, integrate the positions to get velocities and the
velocities to get accelerations, then let the accelerations drive your
visuals - averaging is ok but some basic integration filter would
be better - try ashein++at++boston.sgi.com for some algorithms as he has
done this a bit for autonomous vehicle control - don't forget to discard
truly out-of-band readings (spikes) as they will trash whatever
filter/predictor you devise
good luck!
PS, I'm sure mtj++at++asd.sgi.com (Michael T. Jones) has a few references
on the subject too, so ping him directly and check
