I tried this idea once before earlier this summer but got no
response. So here I go again. I do not want to tread on the proprietary
work of anyone, but I just think that we all could get further, faster
if we could take the time to post to sgigate a large number of example
Performer programs that demonstrate how to get Performer to really shine.
I have coded considerable size applications in gl for several years but
seem to spend a lot of time experimenting(hacking) with Performer to
get a new idea up and running. These short experimental programs
(maybe snippets inside of adapted versions of perfly) could be sent in
to SGI for anonymous ftp(WWW) access with the qualification to
"use at your own risk".
I think the areas of computer usage that have advanced the
fastest in recent years are the ones where there was much interchange
and while I certainly appreciate this user group(I have learned much),
many solutions are better expressed in small chunks of code(that
really work). Small applications would be welcome as well. I would
provide a simple set of changes to perfly that load a terrain model
from MULTIGEN or DWB, add an aircraft model(.flt,.medit,.iv,etc...),
add some gl based 2D instruments, and give the user an external
viewpoint as the aircraft flies with the instruments also being driven.
This app sounds trivial but still took me several weeks to do even
after lots of gl experience. It just takes a while to get Performerized.
SGI did a wonderful thing several years ago and released a set of
example programs together called SST. This saved me a lot of development
time - some of us are better at the application than the actual low
level coding and plenty of example code really helps.
I am asking the Performer folks at SGI to consider this
request and provide some dialogue on the subject.
Thanks to you all!
