Eric S. Hirschorn is having the same problem we had with vout--
lack of control from the command line.

Our first work-around was to allow the NTSC capture frame to default
to whatever location it wanted to, then move the Performer graphic
window around instead of moving the capture frame. This worked on the
Indigo2 we started with but was a problem when we had to change to an
Onyx... the capture frame defaulted to a different position.

The folks at the SGI help line offered the following suggestion which
seems to work... use the .Xdefaults geometry resource.

The line that must be added is

   vout*geometry: +800+100

where the 800 and 100 are offsets to the corner (bottom left, I believe)
of the capture window.

This defaults line can either be added to the .Xdefaults file in the
user's home directory to make the change for a single user, or to the
/usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/Vout file to affect all users. (If either of
those files do not already exist, you will have to create a new file
with just the geometry command in it.

We tried modifying the .Xdefaults file with vout*geometry: +0+0 and sure
enough, the capture frame moved to the top left of the screen :-)

[Now that I think about it, the offset may be to the top left corner of
the capture window... I don't remember for sure.]

Hope this helps!
