Perhaps an asymmetric viewing frustum would serve your purpose.
Check out the pfFrustum and pfChanFOV man pages. It boils down
to using pfMakePerspFrust() calls instead of pfChanFOV() --
the former allows you to define separately the fields of view above
and below the viewing direction, which addresses your concern.
