I've been following this thread for sometime now! Without getting into a debate
on what formats can be deemed "open", I'd like to introduce you to Radiance
Software's OpenInventor based product series consisting of Ez3d Modeler Pro,
Ez3d VR Pro, and Ez3d VR Composer.

Ez3d Modeler 1.0.1 is currently available and includes a powerful
polygon/spline based modeling and raytracing system. Version 2.0 of Ez3d VR
(expected to be out in October this year) includes *real time* modeling tools
as well such as LevelOfDetail and complexity control for all objects, a neat
polygon reduction tool and optimized scene graph output options. Ez3d can read
in files in several different formats including Autodesk DXF, 3DStudio,
Wavefront, Alias, Softimage, etc. to name a few. It can output objects and
scene files in Wavefront, DXF, Rayshade and RenderMan formats.

I didn't include OpenInventor in the list above because Ez3d's native format is
OpenInventor. Optimized OpenInventor scene files created in Ez3d can be used
"as is" with any IRIS Performer based application. Our web page
(http://www.radiance.com/~radiance) contains more info on our products.

Regards,

Ravi
