You could do this with a draw callback and the GL calls cmov() and charstr(),
this could produce 2D text in the 3D scene, the text won't scale with distance
and will only be positioned in 3D not drawn in 3D. If you want a quick
way to place 3D text in performer scene you could try using the Inventor demo
"textomatic" to build a model of the text you want then hit the copy button
in the textomatic gui. Next run "SceneViewer" and from the edit menu select
the paste option. This will paste the text inventor model into the SceneViewer
application. You can then save the 3D text model and use the performer inventor
loader to add it to your scene graph. You will have to use a recent version of
inventor loader to read the text file, it works with the V1.6 loader.
