:there have been already a lot of questions and answers concering
:Performer 2.0 in the performer mailing list. In one of your answers
:to such a question you mentioned the new Indigo2/Impact workstation.
:I have heard some rumours about the new Impact Graphics. One of it
:says that the rendering power of the Impact equals nearly that of
:the RealityEngine2. Is that really true?

A large Indigo2/Impact configuration has the non-antialiased
texture-mapped polygon performance of a small Onyx RealityEngine2
system. It is an amazing thing for a desktop graphics system. It
does not have multisampling, though, so it is not the same as a RE2.

What it is is a very fast, very worthy desktop RealityEngine/Junior.
Come see it at SIGGRAPH next week! In fact, come play with one at
Wednesday's Friends of Performer meeting.

:If it is true the next question must be: Does Silicon Graphics
:currently develop a graphics subsystem which soon will replace
:the RealityEngine2, a "RealityEngine3"?

Well, it is no secret that as soon as one machine is done, the
next one is begun. That's as true of RealityEngines as it is
of cars and other products. I can't discuss future products,
however, so I suggest that you chat with people in your local
sales office for further information.

:I ask this question because
:we want to purchase an addditonal RealityEngine2 pipe for one of
:our Onyx systems by the end of this year.

Talk to your sales rep for this type of upgrade information.
They will help you understand the options that are available
to you. (i.e., wait and see, buy and be happy, buy with some
form of upgrade program, etc.)

Sorry I can't say more,
Michael Jones
