Dear Martin,

The world in which we all operate is based on competition. Competition drives
the rapid development of technology, quality product and market size. An open
format available to be adopted as an industry standard (such as dwb) is what
users are demanding in every area of computing from operating systems to CAD
to word processing.

Coryphaeus has both ascii and binary versions of our public domain file
format. The ascii version will be released later this year.

As far as I know another example of a modeling package with a public domain
file format is the Wavefront 3Design package. I am sure there are others.

Controlling the format for structured development is one thing. Closing the
format under restrictive legal agreements is holding the user's data hostage.
Large Image Generator companies with proprietary hardware do this to the
extreme but, the customer knows it is a proprietary solution going in.
Software companies providing tools for use in an open systems environment
such as SGI should not cripple the potential of the user's investment.

Martin I hope that this helps you understand that my point is two fold:

o OpenFlight is not open; and
o user's have the right to own and control their database investment without
limit

The later is why the Coryphaeus dwb binary file format is both open and user
extensible.

Regards,

Jordan

Dear Jordan,
I don't know if MultiGens's approach is that bad. Transformation
Software in the UK told me that they gave the format specification to
someone only to find that they were starting to write a modelling package
that competed directly with them. I can't think of a single modelling
package that doesn't have some control over it's binary (as opposed to
ascii) format. Either they license the format spec itself or you have to
buy software library support instead. What's .dwb format ascii or
binary ?

        Regards,

        Martin Nicholas.
