Hi Nathaniel,

the fastest way to get the effect is to take a screen snapshot of the
alphadraw window. In an noninteractive tool you have to redo the
blending function to blend overlay and background pixels.
Formulas are given in the blendfunction manpage.

May be someone should write it.
