...just to belabour the point... if all you want is a nice distant fuzzy
horizon with no fog in the main part of the scene then there is a
reasonable compromise.

Use PIX_LIN fog

set the near and far fog ranges to be very close together somewhere within the
far clip range

gently adjust your near clip plane and you can find a point where you still
have a reasonable near-far clip depth and a perfect horizon

I got away with near clip 15m far clip 50000m
near fog 39999 far fog 40000.

It's not perfect but it just about allows me to sit 2m above the ground
without seeing the near clip plane.
