detail textures

I have terrain (textured) with a detail texture. All of a sudden (it seems
like, I'm not sure what caused the change), one of my vehicle models is also
getting detailed by the ground texture when I move close to the vehicle. What
is causing this? The texture on the ground is not the same as the one on the
vehicle. Btw, I have other models which do not get detailed. One possibility
is a texture parameter set from within MultiGen (the origin of the vehicle
model), but the terrain is generated directly from IRIS Performer primitives.

Also, if I turn lighting off, at what viewing angles will the scene become
totally dark (as if the scene were lighted!). It seems that heading of >=0 and
<= 270 cause this. What might I be doing wrong?
