If this is the real reason for not changing keyboards then ...

Dual keyboard switching can be done by not using the internal power
supply at all. Use a separate supply capable of running both keyboards,
connect it to the ground reference of the original keyboard supply and
keep both keyboards ticking over all the time. The switch box should then
only switch the signal wires.

However, having said that, it would also be a perfectly reasonable
question to ask SGI why their power supply fusing cannot handle a
switch on surge?

Surely it shouldn't be necessary to make a maintenance call when
somebody quite innocently trips over the keyboard cable and then
replaces it. Especially since there is no strain relief on the
keyboard cable connection.

Maybe there are other reasons and if so, I would be interested to
know what they are.
