The Z value used is actually 1/z to bias resolution toward the
eye where it's most needed, the spacing between resolvable
distances increases as you move out from the eye. The Z
precision is actually related to (near-eye)/(far-eye), so
pushing the near plane out a bit can make a big difference.

What was your near plane distance?
