Several people have been asking about the IRIS Performer 2.0 release
schedule. Even though experience has made me reluctant to say too
much about future product release dates, I am now able to answer
several of the common questions that have been asked.

First, here are some major new features in IRIS Performer 2.0:

 o Supports IrisGL and OpenGL
 o Supports 32-bit (R3000 & R4000) and 64-bit (R8000) applications
 o Provides both C and C++ APIs
o Asynchronous database paging from disk
o Dynamic Shared Object linking is default (changes file loading)
 o Robust X-Window system integration
o Loaders for even more database formats (incl. OpenInventor 2.0)
o Improved LOD and LightPoint handling
 o Support for indexed GeoStates

On the topic of schedules and dates, here's where we are:

o The IRIS Performer 2.0 alpha is in the hands of a half-dozen
brave developers. They are helping us refine certain API and
usage issues that we were unsure about. They have had it for
     about six weeks.
o The IRIS Performer 2.0 beta testing effort will be underway
soon with these same developers. This is a sanity check of the
changes made since the alpha release.
o The IRIS Performer 2.0 release is planned to ship in June 1995
to all cusomers on software maintenance and for new orders.

:Can I add yet another voice to those requesting more information

    :seems to be forthcoming.

This lapse is my fault. I answered several requests by reply email, but
was not ready to respond in soap-box mode. Please forgive me. The
information above is a good view of release plans as they stand at
this moment, and I will make sure that any change to this information
is communicated via the info-performer mailing list.

One aspect of this committment is the fact that the team now has a
Minister of Propaganda, Ralph Humphries, who is very keen to see
that accurate and updated information is always available. (Feel free
to contact Ralph directly for even more details at "ralphh++at++asd.sgi.com"
