An even easier method is available to you. Change the intersection
search vector geometry. Right now, the default mechanism is to
send a vector down toward the eyepoint from way up in the air
(I think its 25000 meters). Just change this to be downward from a
few inches or feet above the last intersection result and you'll be
OK in most situations.

Alternately, you can get back all the results, and take the closest one
to the last intersection.
