In IRIS GL, a single process cannot map multiple hardware pipes, so
if you are running multipipe, Performer forces you to multiprocess
even on single CPU machines.

I haven't heard of anything similar to your hang. But because of
a bug in 5.2's ussetlock, running as root with non-degrading
priorities can cause Performer to deadlock. And there is a
patched libc.so available through the hotline (when using this
patch you also need to "setenv PFLOCKFIX OFF", we tried to work
around the 5.2 bug at the last minute, but failed.) Performer 1.2
under 5.3 does not have this problem.

Also, you might try explicitly requesting PFMP_APP_CULLDRAW to see
if having fewer processes helps.

If neither of these helps, it sounds like it would take some hotline-
type detective work.
