Using textures in Performer with Wavefront's .obj files

Does anyone have experience loading textures using sgi's loader for Wavefront
object files? I am trying to bring Wavefront objects into Performer.
The objects load (after I looked at the source code and realized I
needed to add to the object a "mtllib" line to reference the material
library), but the texture maps do not. Again, I looked at the source
code and found that it was looking for an rgb format file, not txc.
I fixed this so that all my textures are defined with a ".rgb" file,
and it loads the object without complaining about not finding texture
maps, but when it loads the texture map is not present. I've tried smaller
texture maps, simplifying the material library, etc. Does anyone know how
to make this work?

Also, the documentation in the manuals does not go into any details. Are there
any pointers to documentation that does? And, while I'm dreaming,
does anyone have a loader for a Wavefront ".pv" file (not ".obj").

Any help would be appreciated.
