How to inquire framerate

Is there a way to inquire the current framerate from Performer?
i would like to get the number displayed in the upper left by
pfDrawChanStats and write it to a GUI message widget. i found lots
of detailed stuff in the prstats/pfstats .h files, but nothing
that looked like a frame rate. is pfQueryStats the right way to try
to do this, or is there a better way?
