The DCS approach sounds a bit safer. Monkeying with the matrix
stack to this extent is a bit tricky, since it includes the
transformation from GL (Zin) to Performer (Zup) coordinates. If
you take this into account though, what you describe should work.
The cull callbacks in your code aren't required since setting the
cull mask to zero will guarantee that the object is drawn if
traversal reaches that point.
