This sounds like texgen with TG_CONTOUR and a 2D texture. texgen
automatically generates texture coordinates from vertex positions of
the geometry. That's how Angus gave his swimming sharks in the
Atlantis demo the illusion of light caustics focused by the water
surface.

You can use texgen in Performer by calling it in a pre-draw node
callback above geometry that doesn't have any texture coordinates.
