Being able to automatically sort incomng mail into separate
folders makes life a lot easier when dealing with high volume
mailing lists. I'm only familiar with two Zmail and RAND MH,
but other mail systems probably have similar capabilities.
1) RAND MH users can sort incoming mail creating a
~/.forward file that reads something like:
"| /usr/local/mh/lib/slocal -user jimh"
And then a ~/.maildelivery file like:
#field pattern action result string
#
To info-performer qpipe ? "/usr/local/mh/lib/rcvstore +inbox/infoperf"
Cc info-performer qpipe ? "/usr/local/mh/lib/rcvstore +inbox/infoperf"
This will cause mail to be placed straight into
+inbox/infoperf and other mail to be left in
/usr/mail/<username>. See mhhook(1) for details.
2) Zmail users can sort incoming mail by placing a line in ~/.zmailrc like:
filter pinfo 'save "/usr/people/jimh/Mail/infoperf"' -t -i info-performer
This will cause mail to be saved in ~/Mail/infoperf. It will still appear
in your incoming mail, but messages such as these which have already been
saved to a folder can be purged with the Update command. Zmail/MedaiMail
Pro users can set up filters from the GUI without editting ~/.zmailrc.
