DEM, DLG data and Performer

Has anyone written a converter/loader for DEM data or DLG data from the USGS?

I am fairly new to the data and to performer so I don't know exactly what
would be required or even if it is possible to directly load DEM data into
performer.

If not, is anyone familiar with programs for the SGI that allow you to view
and explore the DEM data? Explorer might be a possibility, but I don't
know very much about Explorer either. Any ideas or suggestions?
