the textures?

16 bit texels are about twice as fast as 32 bit texels. By default,
Performer uses what is fastest rather than prettiest. It can be
specified using pfTexFormat, e.g. for RGB or RGBA textures:
pfTexFormat(tex, PFTEX_INTERNAL_FORMAT, PFTEX_RGBA8)
