Euler angle conventions ???

As a new user of Performer, I was surprised to learn that
the Euler angle conventions used when setting up viewpoints
has the X-axis related to PITCH and the Y-axis related to ROLL.
Most conventions (esp. in engineering) would establish just the
opposite relationship (i.e. X-axis -> ROLL and Y-axis -> PITCH ).

I guess I was just curious why this convention is used?
