Subject: The Ultimate Question
How can I get my perfly to run at a smooth frame rate?
My mission is to model a useful database that updates smoothly on
an ONYX. By useful database I mean The Performer Village with
smooth bends in the road ( more polygons ) and no "distant" hills
(less polygons).
My database as it stands has
additive LODS
LODS for trees, roads, terrain ( flat)
between 500 & 1500 polygons in view at best & worst case
exactly the same models and road layout as The Performer Village
smooth corners in all the roads
polygons fade to texture in the distance
Basically I have done everything I possibly could on the database
modeling side to ensure a steady frame rate. Well that is not quite true
but I have reached a stage where the frame rate is steady enough to see
real glitches that I no longer understand.
My aim was to cut polygon counts down to 1500 maximum everywhere
without losing any of the culture but in moving around the scene
as it is at the moment I am seeing extreme instability of frame rate
with tiny changes in pixel fill overhead and no of polygons - i.e.
glitches when moving very slowly forward.
The purpose of the work is to maximise price-performance so I am looking
at a 2 CPU 2 RM ONYX.
My first approach would be to try and minimise non-essential overheads
on my CPU so I run with the following processes...
PID TTY TIME COMD
0 ? 0:01 sched
1 ? 0:06 init
2 ? 0:00 vhand
3 ? 0:04 bdflush
800 0:00 <defunct>
573 ttyd1 0:01 csh
845 ? 0:11 xwsh
684 ttyd1 0:00 csh
848 pts/0 0:01 csh
825 ? 0:02 4Dwm
1094 pts/0 0:00 ps
233 ? 0:00 xdm
1005 pts/0 0:00 csh
493 ? 0:00 syslogd
799 ? 0:00 xdm
793 input/mouse 1:14 Xsgi
You may notice I have a shell open on my vt100 terminal
The few processes left on my ONYX may take some time up so I shall
further limit myself to run on a single CPU.
I looked at "mpadmin" and plumped for an "mpadmin -I"
and then "runon 1 perfly -m0 toon.flt"
This was a guess only and I would appreciate advise on the correct approach.
So here I am, a viewpoint moving through a database. I look at mt stats and
see the polygon count rolling up and down around 1000 triangles, My pixel fill
is around 0.7 - draw time is trivial and I only want 30 Hz.
So why is may frame rate still glitchy ?......
...Mr Hughes just asked to see my demo hold on....
Would you believe it ? It was smooth upadate at 30Hz all the time!
This is a black art this is, I give up for today. If you would like to try
my low polygon count pfvillage in it's current form copy
death.reading:/usr/people/guest/pftoon
This contains the pftexture ( modified to specify16 but INTERNAL_FORMAT )
The pfmodel ( modified to do additive LOD's )
and pftoon
Use Performer 1.2 and try...
setenv PFPATH /usr/people/whereeveritis/pftoon/pftoon
cd /usr/src/Performer/src/sample/perfly
make opt
mpadin -I1 ( I assume you are logged in as root of course )
runon 1 perfly -m1 toon.flt
Once it is running it is important to set the following settings
in the GUI. Otherwise you will get things fading too near or too far or
not at all.
Lighting OFF
Sky/Ground: Sky Clear
Motion: Drive
LOD Scale: 4.95
Fade LOD: ON
LOD Fade Range: 250 m
see if your ONYX goes as smooth as mine. So far I have noticed glitches
in places where the fill gets a bit high - full screen on 2 RM's remember.
