I'm not that experienced but I try to give a solution:
Performer can load Inventor-files. Inventor is nearly the same as
VRML 1.0. In most cases you just have to change the header of the
file to Inventor and the file extension to .iv and that should
work. Unfortunately 3ds max doesn't support VRML 1.0 any more.
You could try a converter to convert from any other format supported
by 3ds max to VRML 1.0 or Inventor. We tried ivconv (command-line
tool) which seems to work but unfortunately looses some material
properties.
Other solution which might work better: Use the Alias Wavefront
format (file extension obj). We have had good results with that
format. It can be directly loaded by Performer.
