Have a look at the very nice NASA Blue Marble dataset
(http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsroom/BlueMarble/) for textures. These
are whole globe images. You can use the Performer cliptexture functionality
making quite easy the use these as complete textures.
As for the geometry you can use a simple sphere but try to use a tesselation
scheme that keeps the polygon sizes more or less constant (so not a grid in
lat/lon). You can also partition it into sections and use level-of-detail of
even the use the pfASD functionality.
Another issue is how to represent the atmosphere. Some ideas are to use a 2nd
sphere and makes a transparent texture onto it. This still has too much of a
hard edge. Or just use a point billboard centred on the earth with a texture
of the whole atmosphere on it. Looks nice when seen far away but doesn't clip
right with closer objects (like satellite in low earth orbit).
There's only so far you can get using a standard modeller like Multigen
Creator. Some or all of it has to be coded directly in Performer (hey, but
that's the fun part!).
P.S. I have a few contacts in EADS-ST... Les Mureux... Bremen... but not the
defence side...

earth model (mine is too bad, simple sphere with poor texture) for my
application and I don't know where it's possible to find that. Could you
