See below. For reference, my system is a Dell 670, running Performer
3.2 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4. The models I tested with were done
in Creator 3.0.1.

I haven't tried this yet, but are the nodes that fail named with names
of 8 characters (or a multiple of 8). If so, this is not a new problem

An open-source loader would be great, but it's not an easy job (unless
SGI wants to open theirs :-) ). Open Scene Graph has one, but having
contributed some code to it in the past, I wouldn't want to use it as a
base for making a Performer loader (it's just really old and hacked-up).
