Let's say the PS user works on a texture with 5 layers, he has to
flatten the image to allow it to be used by Performer. So he/she will
need to keep two copies, a flattened one and an original one. After
making mods. he/she will save as a flattened .psd. This is practically
the same as have a .rgb and a .psd.

This would not meet the original requirement of "allowing direct
editing in Photoshop" unless you plan to give a PS script along with
the loader which would automatically flatten and export a psd. However
this would still mean another step in the tool chain.
