regarding the geobuilder's tristrip meshing:

i've written a custom file format & loader, partly to address exactly this issue
with models - although my main interest was in getting better results with local
lighting. it still uses the pfGeoBuilder, but you can make it set the maximum
tristrip length to 1. not sure if that still gives you strips or an actual
triangle mesh, but feel free to play around with it. it's called the "B3D"
loader, and the source is at:

it's kind of a tweaked version of vrml97. currently the only exporter is for
maya; the other reason i wrote it was to create named hierarchy suitable for use
with the maya anim exporter.
