That sounds like a good approach for custom applications.
However, my target is to add SoText2 support to the inventor loader, which
means that 2D text needs to be part of the scene-graph. Something that is
possible for OpenInventor, but I don't think that this 'glDrawPixels'
construct can ever be stored in a .pfb file, or even a in-memory scene graph.
