thanks Bram & Tom - at higher PFNY_LEVEL, found that it was indeed missing the
elusive __dso_handle symbol. this made me feel pretty silly since i figured out
how to fix this a year ago & forgot since then ... luckily, followed dave pape's
advice from the list archives & solved it again.

in /usr/share/Performer/src/pfmakedefs, changed LD to from /usr/bin/ld to
/usr/bin/g++. then, removed DSOVERSIONOPT = -soname (since g++ won't recognize
it that flag ... ) and all is well.
