Kevin, the $5k answer is (thanks to Vince at SGI):

"DVP output different from framebuffer contents.

Symptom: Last eight bits of 16-bit luminance output is
incorrect.

Symptom: 12-bit values that are greater than 0x1FF
have the last four
bits equal to the first four bits, e.g. 0x200 becomes
0x202.

Cause: Gamma unit does not work for greater than eight
bits per color
component and cannot be disabled using ircombine to
avoid bit
truncation.

Fix: Contact SGI Global Product Support for a
workaround (ask for
nogamma and dumpchid programs).
Let me know if this helps."
