Peter,

when I visited the SIGGRAPH-2002 Conference in San Antonio one
of the courses that I attended was course 9 titled "Simulating
Nature: Realistic and Interactive Techniques".
See also: http://www.siggraph.org/s2002/conference/courses/crs9.html
Look on the SIGGRAPH 2004 Web site for info on courses for this
year, especially course 31:
http://www.siggraph.org/s2004/conference/courses/31.php

The second talk in this course was titled "Water more real than real"
and was presented by Jerry Tessendorf. Impressively realistic
images and animations of water waves were shown based on a
nice mathematical framework (one example was the ocean water
surface as used in the movie "Titanic").

As always there is a tradeoff between realism and computational
complexity but the course title contains the word 'interactive'
so I assume that (at least some of) the techniques presented
by Jerry Tessendorf can be implemented in real-time simulations.

I assume you would have to Google the name 'Jerry Tessendorf'
and the word(s) water and/or ocean and/or model etc.
If you want Peter, I can send you Jerry's part of the course notes
that I have on CD as a PDF file.

With kind regards, Jurgen Rusch
