I just posted a message which requires the same answer...
Look at the code in /usr/share/Performer/src/lib/pfutil/xwin.c
Also look at the public domain source code glxinfo.c (try
searching on sourceforge)
You need to find out if you have any stereo visuals, and
then pick a specific visual that gives you stereo and
your best (deepest) depth,red-size,green-size,glue-size
etc. Or... no stereo is available but you still pick
your best of everything else.
These two programs gave me the hints I needed. Also
take a look at wglinfo.c source (found on sgi.com)
to do the same thing on MS-Windows.
