Hi Allan,
The earlier comments confirm what I'd heard about Red Hat.
I've been using SuSE 8.2 and find it to be a very stable system. Updates
are painless. 3.1 beta works just fine. I'll probably upgrade to
version 9 when we get the final licensed Performer 3.1.
SuSE was bought last month by Novell-

This same article also mentions that IBM is investing $50 million in
Novell. This makes me think SuSE might be a reasonable choice for a
commercially supported version of Linux.

I'm puzzled by your remark about a support contract. Does SGI offer
some sort of Linux support contract? What's it called? Where do I find
out more about it?
Thanks,
