Regarding the question of Redhat support of desktop Linux, if you visit their website, and go to the Redhat Enterprise Linux or Fedora page:
https://www.redhat.com/software/rhelorfedora/
Redhat desktop is listed as "no longer available", with v.9 listed as the last version available. Fedora is described as the "development forum" product and Enterprise is described as well...The enterprise solution. Enterprise is currently version 3. The price is significantly higher than Redhat 9 was or SuSE is, so it seems likely that many will jump ship.
It looks like the rumor you heard was true regarding the traditional Redhat product, but they do still offer a Linux product.
