The general rumbling I've picked up (from various mailing lists as well
as limited personal experience) is that Nvidia's Linux support is far
ahead of ATi's. The one box we got with an ATi card had a lot of
problems with stability and rendering errors until we replaced the card
with a GeForceFX. ATi does have Linux drivers, but they don't yet
support XFree86 4.3 (Red Hat 9), and I've heard (not certain) that they
haven't yet released a driver for the Radeon 9800 (only the 9700 and
lower).

So, I'd stick with Nvidia until they start putting more effort into
supporting Linux
