Hello Performers!
I think the following will get your hearts beating a little faster this
morning.. :-)
SGI has just introduced two new & much-anticipated MIPS/IRIX systems:
the Silicon Graphics Onyx4 UltimateVision, a new generation of the Onyx
family; and the Silicon Graphics Tezro, our next generation visual
workstation platform. I'll quote a few highlights about each new
product below. Please visit the SGI website, contact us, or contact
your SGI reps for more information!
1. Silicon Graphics Onyx4 UltimateVision
"The new Onyx4 UltimateVision system shatters existing benchmarks for
high-performance visualization systems. It is simply the world's most
scalable system of its kind, providing the exact capabilities that a
user needs. This remarkable system scales to unprecedented levels in a
shared-memory environment--up to 64 MIPS® processors and 32 graphics
pipelines in standard configurations and further still under custom
configurations. Scalability is achieved using the award-winning SGI®
NUMAflex(TM) shared-memory architecture for maximum throughput. The
result is a revolution in visualization at all levels; Onyx4 delivers an
amazing eight times better performance, one-fifth the size, and a price
that is five times lower than previous generations.
"Onyx4 also features best-in-class standards-based graphics components
and a wealth of new features. One such feature is pipeline
programmability, which enables increased realism in a single pass and
allows relevant computational tasks such as tessellation to be shifted
from the CPU to the graphics pipeline. This dramatically accelerates
visualization and enables the creation of extraordinarily rich,
stunningly realistic, real-time environments."
Onyx4 UltimateVision starts at $45,000, one-fifth the price of previous
Onyx systems.

2. Silicon Graphics Tezro
The Silicon Graphics Tezro visual workstation is powered by up to four
MIPS R16000 processors in the high-bandwidth architecture from the SGI
3000 supercomputer line; on a system with SGI VPro V12 graphics, up to
16GB of RAM, 64-bit IRIX, seven PCI-X slots, either a cool desktop tower
or rackmount form factor, and starting at $20,500 US List -- 20% lower
than the Octane2.
"Silicon Graphics Tezro was designed for creative and technical users
who continually seek higher application performance and more advanced
levels of capability on the desktop. Tezro delivers leading-edge
visualization, multiprocessing, and digital media to technical and
creative users and is designed to help individuals and teams deliver
cutting-edge results in ever-shorter production cycle.
"Equipped with SGI® VPro(TM) V12 graphics and unparalleled 12-bit per
component RGBA fidelity, Tezro provides high-speed, high-quality
graphics that are supported by the IRIX operating system and SGI
application program interfaces, such as OpenGL Performer(TM). Silicon
Graphics Tezro also offers a full suite of multiformat digital media
options called DMediaPro(TM), previously available only on SGI Onyx
systems. With these options, Tezro users can edit multiple streams of
10-bit high-definition (HD) video and create a wide variety of real-time
HD and standard-definition effects."

As you might expect, these new systems wonderfully complement the
top-end multi-pipe & multi-processor capabilities of OpenGL Performer.
And at SIGGRAPH, you'll see some of what we've been doing with
programmable vertex & fragment shaders on the Onyx4 UltimateVision... We
will have one on-hand for the Friends of Performer meeting and in other
locations (more info to come) - be sure to join us & check them out!
Enjoy!
